A lot of performance is packed inside Intel Core i7-7700HQ, a quad-core Kaby Lake chip with 2.8GHz clock speed and turbo of 3.8GHz. Thanks to its four cores and high clock frequency, some real multitasking – many tabs open on browser and Photoshop, for example – won’t put the system on its knees. In CPU Mark, this i7 gets a high score of ~9000 points.

The standard memory for this notebook is 16 gigabytes DDR4 RAM. Staying at that is smart move to do, as most games and programs can not even utilize all sixteen gigabytes. But then again, if serious multitasking is your thing, more might be needed. The maximum memory would be 32 gigabytes with the two memory slots on this unit.

There is an interesting yet very useful storage drive configuration in this rig. First, you will find an old-school 1TB 5400RPM (140Mbps) SATA hard drive inside. It might seem slow to you, but don’t worry since there is another drive. Acer has also installed M.2 SATA SSD here, with nominal space of 256GB and actual space of 240GB after Windows installation files (yes, Windows is cleverly installed on the SSD). Out of those five, two are USB 2.0 which are only useful for devices without big bandwidth needs – such as mouse. Acer included a 4-cell 70Wh battery on this model. According to user reports, it lasts about 5 hours under web surfing. That is quite a good battery life for this kind of notebook, I must say! Naturally, if you’re playing games, the duration will drastically drop, to around 2 hours.

Acer Aspire V 15 (VN7-593G-73KV) is full of benefits for a budget gamer or power user. First, it has blazing fast solid-state drive and i7 processor which keep any program and software running smooth and lag-free. Second, there is a GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card ready to propel your games to decent frame rates even if you’re playing with plenty of eye candy turned on. Intel Core i5-5200U used to be a very good processor 1-2 years ago, now it’s getting a bit old. But that’s not to say it’s useless, not at all. There are still plenty of things you can do with this dual-core 2.2GHz (2.7GHz turbo) processor. That includes pretty much all the activities a home or office user normally does. If you’re interested, the processor gets a ~3500 score in CPU Mark which is a perfect example of mid-range unit.

Currently there is 4GB (DDR3L) memory installed in Samsung NP300E5K-L04US. It’s not a wonderful amount, but for casual users it’s alright. Even some multitasking is doable with four gigabytes. But it’s not hard to add more – the default RAM is installed on one SODIMM chip and another slot is free on the motherboard. The maximum RAM you can go to is 16 gigabytes, that is definitely enough for even the most demanding users!

There is nothing groundbreaking in the storage section, a good old 1TB 5400RPM hard drive providing the storage for you. I’m positive some see this drive as negative due to its limited performance. Well, tell you what, the laptop has a free M.2 SATA 3 (2280) slot! You can install solid-state drive there, and I hear that it’s effortless to get to that slot.

Gaming is the weak point of Samsung NP300E5K-L04US. To keep good frame rates you would need a dedicated graphics card, but guess if this laptop has one or not? Of course not, it’s impossible for this price. So you are left with the integrated Intel HD 5500. It can run less demanding games decently, those including Counter-Strike: Go on high settings and 720p resolution spitting out ~40FPS. However, something like GTA 5 is different – you’ll be struggling to get 25FPS even on low settings and resolution.

Samsung NP300E5K-L04US offers average amount of ports. Three USB connector in a laptop is the most common, that is also found here. Of those, two are USB 2.0 and one is USB 3.0. The version 2.0 is much slower than 3.0, so use the USB 3.0 as often as you can.

If you feel the need to hook up an extra monitor to this you’re welcome to do so. The notebook sports a full-size HDMI output (maximum 1920×1080). It accepts, among other things, a HD television. Naturally a normal desktop monitor can be used as well.

You should not have problems with networking. A very fast Gigabit RJ-45 port is available for those who want to use network cable. Also a basic 802.11bgn Atheros WiFi adapter is included. It has the option to turn on Bluetooth 4.0 too.

There is one thing you won’t find here and that’s the optical drive! So, if you need to access discs, you need an external DVD burner. The good thing about them is affordability, they cost just like 25 dollars.

Samsung NP300E5K-L04US comes with a Full HD screen that is sweet considering the low price! On the 15.6″ LCD this 1080p resolution looks decent, giving good(ish) image quality. Yet, remember it’s a TN (Twisted Nematics) panel, not the premium IPS (In-Plane Switching). Obviously, you’re not getting a picture quality of a 1000 dollar laptop here. But for the money it works well. The display does not support touch and the maximum brightness is 250 nits.

On top of the screen you will find a 480p webcam.

The 3-cell 43Wh battery unit is promised a 6 hours operating time. Well, you might just get that with very lightweight web surfing and text editing with dimmed screen. With full brightness and throwing some videos to the mix, the battery life will be three-four hours.

Unfortunately, this notebook does not come with a backlit keyboard.

Samsung NP300E5K-L04US is not by any means a heavy-duty laptop, more like a choice for casual user. There’s plenty of performance for everyday tasks which includes anything you can do with browser, even streaming videos. Office type of use is also piece of cake, so is listening to music. I must also give points for the Full HD screen which is a rarity for this price. One thing that is off-limits would be gaming as there’s no proper graphics card present. Nothing can be done about that, but for the little money this Samsung costs I can not complain!

It is not in the same league than the top GTX 960 and above cards, but by restricting settings and resolution you’ll find the 940MX useful for most games. Ideally, you would be running games like GTA 5 on medium settings and 720p resolution, getting over 60 frames per second. Lower tier games, such as League of Legends and sports games, would possess no challenge for the 940MX card anyway.

Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US is not your typical ultrabook in the ports department either. It has many connections, but that is admittedly due to the larger 15-inch size. In total you are going to find four USB ports here, two being regular USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0. Also USB Type-C is located on the side, it supports 4K display and also charging of the laptop. On top of that, a regular HDMI-out is provided. You can thus connect an external monitor to the notebook no problem.

Memory cards can be used, but you are limited to microSD cards – there’s no full size reader here. CDs and DVDs won’t obviously work either, a notebook this thin has no space for optical drives. Using external USB DVD drive is your best bet for working with discs.

Going wireless is your only option for networking. RJ-45 port is not present. But the WiFi card is excellent, Intel Wireless-AC 8260 with support for 2×2 802.11ac standard and Bluetooth 4.1. Long range and high speeds are strengths of this adapter.

I have read praising words about the display on Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US. The screen has exactly 15.0″ diagonal, while most “fifteen inchers” are usually 15.6″. The resolution is 1920×1080 which is something any laptop of this price should have. The screen has anti-glare coating and coupled with 500nits maximum brightness, perfect for using the laptop outside. The IPS panel moreover means accurate colors and wide viewing angles. Touch is not supported. The camera on top won’t capture 1080p video, just 720p.

Now, 15″ laptops don’t often have great battery. But that’s not true in this Samsung at all! People are talking over 10 hours life which is magnificent. You won’t have to worry about finding a power outlet often. And in fact, when you need to charge the unit, the USB-C charging will get the job done in 100 minutes (battery full).

Overall, Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X5N-X01US is a great ultrabook. Its strengths lie in solid processor performance, beautiful Full HD screen and darn long battery life. It is not going to slow down before the heaviest of programs thanks to the i7 processor and (upgradeable) SSD. Also gaming to an extent works because dedicated graphics card is in place. And yes, the battery life is wonderful on this, you will be going the whole day with a single charge. All of this costs money, but if you are not ready to make compromises, this Samsung laptop is a very safe and powerful choice for quality ultrabook seekers!

There isn’t a piece of software that wouldn’t run on it, from Mozilla Firefox to YouTube to Photoshop, all will be accepted.

Memory of this unit is a single 8GB 2133MHz DDR4 stick, occupying the sole memory slot on the mainboard. Most likely you can upgrade it to 16GB, but the current setting with eight gigabytes suffices to families, students, weekend warriors and even power users!

Do not get too excited about the storage drive, it’s just a terabyte 5400RPM hard drive plugged to SATA port. These kind of convertibles long for a solid-state drive, so if you want that you have two options: choose another model of this laptop with SSD installed or upgrade yourself!

Lenovo Flex 4 (80VD000CUS) does include a graphics card, the AMD R5 M430 with 2GB GDDR3 memory. Should that make a gamer happy? May be. It’s going to run most games fine especially if you are not greedy with settings. GTA 5, for example, will run at a nice 40-50FPS using medium presets and 720p resolution.

In my opinion, most users just can’t go wrong with Lenovo Yoga 710 80V4000GUS. It has impressive performance under the hood, the main points of interests being Core i5 processor and solid-state drive. Appropriate for this price, also the 2-in-1 display supports Full HD – professionals that work with graphics will appreciate the 1080p screen. If I was to say something negative it would be gaming performance: only integrated graphics card is found inside. Otherwise, as said above, the Lenovo is very decent and safe choice if you’re after some laptop quality and performance!

The Folio 1040 performed particularly well in our testing; its key features include superb overall quality, a high-resolution 14-inch display, good keyboard and innovative touchpad (which HP calls the ForcePad), an emphasis on security and enterprise-grade features including a SmartCard slot and available docking station.

We use our new Powermark benchmark in Balanced mode to test battery life. This test is a combination of automated web browsing, word processing, gaming and video playback workloads. This test is more strenuous than our previous test and produces expectedly lower battery life numbers.

The Folio 1040 lasted 4 hours, 15 minutes; this number is right in line with other Ultrabooks including the Acer Aspire S7. It outruns the Dell Latitude 7440 by about a half hour. Again, note our tests are more demanding than a typical workload; users can expect a couple of hours beyond the numbers we received from this test for everyday usage.
